.DOWNLOAD BIO AS A PDF Samuel Bernstein grew up all over the world, living in Cairo, Honolulu, Austin, Phoenix, Albuquerque, New York, Los Angeles, and Ft. Collins, Colorado, while also traveling through Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. His writing life has become, by both necessity and design, a writing, producing, and directing career, including the formation of Babyhead Productions with husband Ronald Shore. He dove into show business immediately upon graduating high school a year early in Texas, moving to New York at the age of 17. After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts he began to work as an actor and singer, most notably playing the role of Magaldi in various productions of Evita. In the early 90s he started writing, and his first play, The Liquidation of Granny Peterman, was produced in Hollywood. While writing and rewriting the script that would become his first film, he worked on his first book, a photo-anthology called Uncommon Heroes that won a Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association. Silent Lies, his dark, violent film about incest, caused a stir, and was briefly banned in England until cuts were made. He wrote and produced the Paramount/Showtime film Bobbie's Girl, which starred Bernadette Peters, Rachel Ward, and Jonathan Silverman. Bernadette received an Emmy nomination while the film received a G.L.A.A.D. nomination and a citation from The Advocate as one of the top ten television events of the year. Bernstein's book Mr. Confidential was named a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year finalist and won an Hermes Creative Platinum Award for Outstanding Non-Fiction. He is working with composer David Snyder to turn it into a stage musical. His novel Lulu has won a 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Fiction and an Iternational Book Award for Literary Fiction. He has worked on such televisions shows as Judging Amy, Witch, Sally B., Kill Your Inner Child, and Icing on the Cake; is co-creator and executive producer for two new reality shows, Sarge and Fat Chance; and he has written lyrics for songs in W.i.t.c.h., Bobbie's Girl, The Peddler, Magic Boys, The Middle Place, and the upcoming stage musical Mr. Confidential. He lives in West Hollywood, California, with his husband of 16 years, Ronald Shore, and their three incorrigible dachshunds.
